Houthi rebels claim attack on cargo ship heading to Israel in Red Sea

Sana: Yemen’s Houthi rebels have claimed a drone attack on a cargo ship bound for Israel in the Red Sea.

“The military operation against the Mersik Gebrletter container ship heading towards Israel was precise and caused damage to the ship,” Houthi military spokesman Yehya Sariya said in a statement on Thursday, Xinhua news agency reported.

“The attack took place when the ship’s crew refused to respond to the call of our naval forces,” he said.

The spokesman claimed that the Houthis had successfully intercepted several other foreign ships bound for Israel during the past 48 hours.

“Our forces will continue to block all ships headed to Israeli ports in the Arabian Sea and the Red Sea until food and medicine aid is allowed to enter the Gaza Strip,” Sariya said.

It was the latest in a series of anti-Israel attacks claimed by the Houthis since the Israel-Hamas war began on October 7.

On Tuesday, the Houthi group said they fired a missile at a Norwegian oil-laden ship headed towards Israel in the Red Sea.

On 19 November, Houthi fighters hijacked a commercial ship, the Galaxy Leader, in the Red Sea and brought it to the port city of Hodeidah.
