New Delhi:On the occasion of World Environment Day, New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) organized a special Tree Plantation Drive in Nehru Park, Chanakyapuri, New Delhi today in which Hon’ble Lieutenant Governor of Delhi, Shri Vinai Kumar Saxena and Chief Secretary of Delhi, Shri Naresh kumar planted saplings of Champa while visiting the sewer treatment plant (STP) at Nehru Park.
On the occasion, Vice Chairman–NDMC, Shri Satish Upadhyay, Member -NDMC, Shri Kuljeet Singh Chahal, Smt Vishakha Sailani and Secretary-NDMC, Shri Vikram Singh Malik along with senior Officers and morning walkers planted saplings of Grevillea Robusta, Cassia fistula, Jasminium Sambac and Bogenvellia and Peepal.
Earlier in the morning, all schools of NDMC also celebrated this occasion by organizing tree plantation drive in their respective school premises and surroundings area. The school plantation drive was participated by school teachers, students, parents, representatives of RWAs, MTAs of the area. The Horticulture Department of NDMC provided saplings of different varieties to all NDMC schools’ Eco Clubs and Environmental Societies to celebrate World Environment Day.
After planting the sapling of Grevillea Robusta in Nehru Park, Shri Upadhyay speaking on the occasion stated that NDMC covers only 3% of total area of Delhi but 64.5% of this area is green cover. He stated that maintaining this green asset is a great responsibility of NDMC but NDMC Horticulture Department maintained it in appreciative manners. He further said that we are celebrating “Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav”, in which it is our prime duty to make our environment free from pollution, dust and dirt for ecological balance of nature. It will be a great freedom for our future generation to enable them to breathe in a pollution free environment.
Member–NDMC, Shri Kuljeet Singh Chahal after planting a sapling of Peepal tree in Nehru Park, shared that the compensatory tree plantation drive would be launched in order to compensate uprooted trees caused due to massive thunderstorm in New Delhi area on 30th of May. He said that at least ten trees including peepal would be planted for a single damaged tree. He urged RWA & MTA for their involvement in tree plantation drive launched by civic body.
NDMC – Secretary, Shri Vikram Singh Malik appealed to the morning walkers, visitors and residents of New Delhi area to reduce the use of single use plastic in day to day life activities, so that civic body could achieve the target of making city single use plastic free. He also urged the RWAs, MTAs, NGOs as well as government and non-government offices to join the initiatives launched by the civic body to eliminate the plastic waste from the parks, gardens, schools, hospitals, markets, streets, lanes, Roads and other public places.
