Kolkata: Doctors’ protests are continuing across the country after the rape and murder incident at Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. Meanwhile, Kolkata Police has imposed Section 163 around RG Kar Hospital.
Kolkata Police said in a statement, “For the next 7 days from August 18, RG. Section 163 has been imposed around Kar Hospital under the Indian Civil Security Code, 2023. No gathering, dharna or rally will be allowed there during this period.”
Earlier, the West Bengal government had advised all medical colleges and hospitals in the state to avoid assigning night duty to female doctors.
Chief Advisor to the Chief Minister Alapan Bandopadhyay announced an initiative called “Ratireer Sathi” to ensure the safety of female doctors. He said, “Every effort should be made to avoid assigning night duty to female doctors as far as possible. Security personnel with good behavior towards women will be deployed in all medical colleges and hospitals.” It is known that on August 9, the body of a female trainee doctor was found under mysterious circumstances in the campus of Kolkata’s R.G. Kar Medical College and Hospital. She was a second year post graduate student and was on duty in the Chest Medicine department. Her body was found on the fourth floor of the emergency building.
There is anger across the country against the murder of the female doctor and doctors are on strike in many states including West Bengal.
