Guwahati | New Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma Monday appealed to banned militant organizations to close the path of violence and come to the negotiating table and also said that the first task of his government would be to curb Kovid-19 in the state. After assuming office as the 15th Chief Minister of Assam, Sarma said that an effective roadmap would be finalized in the first cabinet meeting on Tuesday to curb the alarming growth of coronaviruses in the state.
Sarma, former Minister of Health, Finance, PWD and Education in Sarbananda Sonowal-led government, termed Covid’s situation in Assam as ‘dangerous’ and said that 5,000 new positive cases are coming to the state every day.
The new chief minister told the media, “Now you will find a very active government in the state. If Assam controls the Covid epidemic it will help prevent the spread of the disease to other northeastern states.”
He said that all the election promises of the Bharatiya Janata Party, including flood control, creation of one lakh jobs for unemployed youth, micro-finance problems, empowering women under the state’s flagship scheme ‘Orunodaya’, will be fulfilled.
On a question, the Chief Minister said that we currently have Rs 7,000 crore in our treasury and claimed that “we have the best financial position in the country and there is no reason to worry about the monetary situation of Assam”.
He said that the BJP’s ‘resolution letter’ released before the Assam Assembly elections promised the correct NRC (National Register of Citizens) in Assam, which would be fulfilled.
The Chief Minister said that to correct NRC, the state government would conduct 20 percent investigation in the border areas and 10 percent inside Assam.
“If we come to know that there are major shortcomings, we will urge the court to rethink the NRC,” he said.
