West Bengal lockdown extended till August 31! Relaxations during festive days

West Bengal lockdown news: West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee on Tuesday declared that state will continue with the lockdown protocol till August 31 with relaxations due to Eid, but there will be two days in a week when there will be complete lockdown. Earlier, the Bengal government had announced lockdown protocol to be followed till July end.

Mamata Benerjee-led state government implemented the biweekly lokcdown last week. The next lockdown is scheduled on July 29. In August, there will be strict lockdown across the state on 2nd, 5th, 8th, 9th, 16th, 17th, 23rd, 24th and 31st, Banerjee added. The lockdown in the containment zone has also been extended till August 31, the chief minister said today. CM Mamata Banerjee said that there will be complete lockdowns in the state twice a week.

West Bengal Eid festival

However, due to Eid-ul-Zuha festival the lockdown in West Bengal will be imposed on August 2 in instead of August 1. While addressing media persons in Nabanna, Banerjee said, “We are extending the two-day lockdown every week in the state, which was in force till July 31, till August 31.” Schools and colleges will remain closed till August 31, but if the situation improves then, from September 5, they can be opened on alternative days, she said.

Exceptions for religious festivals and national holidays

Exceptions have been made for religious festivals and national holidays such as Bakri Eid, Rakhshabandhan, and Independence Day. “We will not do any lockdown this week because of Bakri Eid. We want the minorities to co-operate and avoid any gatherings. I request them all to celebrate indoors,” Mamata Banerjee said.

Latest Data of coronavirus in West Bengal

According to the latest available data, the number of positive COVID-19 cases in West Bengal has surged to 60,830, with the majority of cases from Kolkata, North 24 Parganas and Howrah districts.

The state reported 2,112 new cases, while 2,166 people were discharged from different hospitals on Monday. The case tally in the state includes 19,502 active cases and 1,411 deaths.
