New Delhi: In the Lok Sabha, the Union Law Ministry responded to several questions raised by Members of Parliament, including the number of habeas corpus petitions in Jammu and Kashmir after the abrogation of Article 370 and the total number of seats available in law schools across the country.
Anantnag Lok Sabha MP Hasnain Masoodi had sought information about habeas corpus petitions filed in Jammu and Kashmir after the abrogation of Article 370.
The ministry revealed that a total of 2,165 such petitions were filed in the Jammu and Kashmir High Court and the Supreme Court from August 2019 to June 2023.
Responding to concerns regarding the delay in the disposal of habeas corpus petitions challenging detention orders under the Public Safety Act, the Ministry said that appropriate steps are being taken to ensure timely hearings and proceedings. Are.
The government said, the detaining authorities file their arguments and provide timely records to the courts besides ensuring the presence of lawyers on the date of the hearing. All other necessary steps, wherever necessary, are being taken in a timely manner to ensure the speedy disposal of such petitions by the courts.
Machhalishahr Lok Sabha MP BP Saroj had sought information about the number of seats available in law colleges. To this, the government said, there are a total of 3,09,656 seats in various law schools. Of these, 71,140 seats are for the five-year LLB. There are 2,11,763 seats for the three-year LLB and 26,753 seats for the LLM.
The ministry also said that 311 new law universities and colleges have been set up from January 2019 to 2022, of which a significant number are in states like Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, Punjab and Haryana and Assam.
MPs Shardaben Patel and Rameshbhai Patel sought details about cases pending in courts for more than 50 years. The ministry informed that based on the Integrated Case Management Information System of the Supreme Court, there is no such case pending before the apex court.
