New Delhi, October 10 Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) national convener Arvind Kejriwal was detained by police in Delhi along with senior party leaders Sanjay Singh, Saurabh Bhardwaj, and Durgesh Pathak. Meanwhile, senior AAP leader and Punjab in-charge Manish Sisodia was also detained by police in Chandigarh, the capital of Punjab, while protesting against alleged irregularities in the electoral rolls and vote theft outside the Election Commission’s office in Chandigarh.
The Aam Aadmi Party on Saturday protested against alleged “vote theft” and irregularities in the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of the electoral rolls outside the Election Commission’s office in Chandigarh. The protest was organized by youth organizations and supported by the AAP. The protesters also joined in support of the Cockroach Janata Party (CJP)’s campaign against electoral irregularities.
The protesters demanded the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar. They questioned the process of voter list revision and demanded that citizens’ voting rights be protected.
The protest was attended by several senior leaders and a large number of party workers, including Punjab AAP President Aman Arora, Cabinet Ministers Harpal Singh Cheema and Baljit Kaur, and the party’s media in-charge Baltej Pannu. Tight security arrangements were made at the venue in view of the demonstration.
Manish Sisodia questioned the alleged deletion of names from the voter list, stating that the right to vote belongs to citizens and cannot be taken away arbitrarily. He accused the BJP-led central government and the Election Commission of undermining democratic rights through alleged irregularities in the voter list revision process.
The detention of Sisodia and other AAP leaders was a significant development during the protest in Chandigarh. The protest was held amid heightened political activity in various parts of the country regarding the voter list revision and the accountability of the Election Commission.
Meanwhile, Punjab BJP President Kewal Singh Dhillon hit back at AAP over the protests against the SIR. He said he did not understand whom AAP was blaming.
Dhillon alleged that the Aam Aadmi Party itself was involved in vote theft. He said, “During the municipal elections in Patiala, Moga, and Bagha Purana, AAP rigged the elections, leading the Supreme Court to order re-elections. Now, the same party is protesting on this issue. They should be ashamed.”
