Administration had issued advisory for residents to keep their doors, windows shut and keep utensils handy to make loud noise in an event of an attack.

Locust swarms destroy crops across India.

Large and aggressive swarms of these crop-devouring short-horned insects have invaded more than two dozen districts covering more than 50,000 hectares of desert areas of western India. Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh and Gujarat are the worst affected states.

Locusts attack in Indian History

In the nineteenth century, India experienced serious locust outbreaks in 1812, 1821, 1843-’44, 1863, 1869, 1878, 1889-’92, and 1896-’97. Several efforts were made to combat the swarms. This culminated in 1939 in the establishment of the present-day Locust Warning Organisation.
