New Delhi. Prime Minister Narendra Modi, while addressing the 28th East Asia Summit in Jakarta on Thursday, said multilateralism and rules-based international order are necessary to counter geopolitical conflicts.
Modi said, “The current global scenario is surrounded by challenging circumstances and uncertainties. Terrorism, extremism and geopolitical conflicts are major challenges for all of us. To counter these, multilateralism and rules-based international order are necessary. International laws “It is mandatory to fully comply with this. Commitment and joint efforts of all are also necessary to strengthen the sovereignty and territorial integrity of all countries because today is not the era of war.”
“Dialogue and diplomacy is the only way to a solution,” he said.
Modi elaborated, “Enhancing India-ASEAN connectivity is also our focus. Peace, security and prosperity in the Indo-Pacific region is in the interest of all of us.”
The Prime Minister said, “The need of the hour is to create an Indo-Pacific where international law, including UNCLOS, applies equally to all countries; where there is freedom of navigation and overflight; and where there is unimpeded lawful commerce for the benefit of all. India believes that the code of conduct for the South China Sea should be effective and in line with UNCLOS.” He said that it should take into account the interests of those countries that are not directly involved in the discussions.
Modi further said, “Challenges related to climate change, cyber security, food security, health and energy are especially affecting underdeveloped and developing countries. During our presidency of the G20, we are focusing on these important issues. “
On the situation in Myanmar, Modi said that India’s policy takes into account the views of ASEAN.
“At the same time, as a neighboring country, we are in favor of ensuring peace and security on the borders,” he said.
Modi conveyed his best wishes to the incoming President of Lao PDR and assured India’s full support for its presidency.
