New Delhi:“Seasonal dry leaves are falling and scattering everywhere. NDMC utilizes the same for the purpose of converting into “Green Organic Manure” to maintain and enhance the beauty of its major parks & gardens”, it is stated by Shri Satish Upadhyay, Vice Chairman, NDMC after visiting Nehru Park-Chanakyapuri alongwith senior officers of Horticulture Department under Swachh Bharat Mission announced by Hon’ble Prime Minister of India and celebration of 75 years of India’s Independence as “Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav”.
While giving the details, Shri Upadhyay said that presently NDMC has 47 areas / locations – including Nehru Park, Lodhi Garden, Talkatora Garden, Children Park as well as Colony Parks wherein 110 compost pits are located in which 1 to 1.5 ton manure are produced per day. The process of production of manure takes a minimum 50-60 days. He informed that NDMC uses the green waste of only its major gardens and colony parks.
Shri Upadhyay said that the task for the lifting of leaves from the roadside by the Health Department but the dry waste collected from inside the park is processed in Compost pits by the Horticulture Department. He further said that the existing Compost Pits are sufficient to consume the entire waste generated inside the parks and the excessing waste collected from the roadside is transferred through trucks to Okhla Compost Plant by the Health Department.
While giving the technical details of the process, Shri Rais Ali, Director (Horticulture) said that there are three components of making manure in pits having a depth of 2.30 to 3 meter. The process started from collecting the dry leaves from the park or surroundings thereafter Leave the leaves in the sun until there is no moisture left in them, segregate leaves from branches through shredder machines, now crush the dry leaves or turn them into powder through the machine as thin as possible thereafter sprinkle of microbes and water in it. There are holes in the compost pit that help to supply oxygen and give moisture. All the procedure depends upon the season.
Shri Upadhyay said that this is the healthiest quality of manure for the soil. NDMC is utilizing 50% of its manure requirement through in-house production and maintaining major gardens and enhancing the beauty of New Delhi area roundabout, colony small parks etc. as well.
He said that better yet, it’s a cost-effective, organic way to care for your plants by providing chemical-free nutrients. He said that this process is not only beneficial for the soil but it comes with a lot of added benefits beyond being a cost-effective way to create your own topsoil.
Shri Upadhyay appeals to the Resident Welfare Associations and Citizens of the New Delhi area to participate in NDMC’s green initiative by constructing small compost pits in the surroundings of their colony parks and using the green garbage for the production of “Green Organic Manure” instead of burning leaves garbage which is hazardous for health point of view also.
Shri Upadhyay said that our aim is to enhance the beauty of the NDMC area as well as to increase the Green Cover of the New Delhi area on the vision of Hon’ble Prime Minister’s “Swachh Bharat Mission” & on the theme of celebrating 75 years of India’s Independence as “Aazadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav”.
