Parliamentary elections in Sri Lanka: The Rajapaksa brothers’ party towards an overwhelming majority

SLPP gets 60% votes in Sinhalese majority area south; SLPP’s allies win in north with less minority

The Sri Lankan People’s Party (SLPP) of the Rajapaksa family appears to be winning by an overwhelming majority in the Sri Lankan general elections. Trends are coming out right now. Official results will be announced on Friday morning. In the southern part of the country, the SLPP has garnered around 60% of the vote. There is a majority Sinhalese community here. It is considered the SLPP’s vote bank.

Tamil minorities dominate the north.

The Alum Peoples Democratic Party (APDP), an ally of the SLPP, has defeated the Tamil National Alliance (TNA) in the polling division of Jaffna. Whereas, APDP has lost in the second division of Jaffna district itself. As soon as the counting started on Thursday, SLPP founder Basil Rajapaksa said – We are going to form the government. Basil is the younger brother of President Gotabaya Rajapaksa and PM Mahinda Rajapaksa.

Sajit Premdasa’s party collision

The SLPP is having a fight with Sajib Premadasa’s SJB party. It is formed from the United National Party (UNP), the oldest party in the country. Marxist democracy Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) has outperformed the UNP. UNP is looking at fourth place in the trends so far.

113 seats required for majority

Elections were held in Sri Lanka on Wednesday. Counting began on Thursday. The results will be officially announced on Friday morning. There are a total of 225 seats. 113 seats are needed for a majority.
