POLICE HARASSMENT OF SDPI ACTIVISTS IN UP – SDPI LODGES COMPLAINT WITH ELECTION COMMISSION

New Delhi: Social Democratic Party of India (SDPI) has filed a complaint with the Election Commission of India about the UP police harassment of the SDPI workers and requested the Commission to direct the UP police to end its highhandedness and harassment. Social Democratic Party of India is a secular, democratic political party
recognized by the Election Commission. The UP government is in an effort to terrorise and vilify the party using its police force, for the party being vocal against the undemocratic and bigot acts of the Yogi government. The police barge into SDPI offices, take away documents, literatures and office stationeries illegally. They arbitrarily take the party leaders, cadres and workers into custody time and again. Police act of harassment of SDPI workers is intended to create a sense of fear among the general public towards the party. The party workers so taken to custody are later released. This process is being repeated. They even threaten the landlords who rented their premises for SDPI offices, thus blocking the functioning of the party.

Dr. Tasleem Rahmani while submitting the complaint to the Deputy Election Commissioner apprised him of the activities of SDPI. The party is growing among the marginalised and underprivileged masses all over the country. The fascist governments at Centre and UP are viewing the growth of the party as a threat to their hegemony, and hence they want to suppress the party. They use the police to carry out this act. Dr. Rahmani requested the DEC
to restrain the UP police from indulging in anti-democratic and unlawful activities against SDPI and ensure that the democratic rights of the party to function are protected.
