Washington, US President Joe Biden will host the sixth (fourth in-person) Quad Leaders Summit in his hometown of Wilmington, Delaware on Saturday. He will host Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Australian PM Anthony Albanese and Japanese PM Kishida Fumio at Archmere Academy. This is where the US President studied high school.
This is the first time that Biden will host foreign leaders in Wilmington as President. This also includes a ‘Leaders’ Dinner’ at his private home. The White House believes that this is ‘a reflection of the President’s deep personal relationship with each of the Quad leaders.’
The Quad leaders will also unveil an important initiative ‘The Cancer Moonshot’. It aims to implement innovative strategies to prevent, detect and treat the disease and reduce the impact of the disease on patients and their families.
Indian Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri said earlier this week that the group aims to help reduce cases of cervical cancer in the Indo-Pacific region.
PM Modi left for the US tour on Saturday morning. Before his departure, he said, “I look forward to meeting my colleagues President Biden, Prime Minister Albanese and Prime Minister Kishida for the Quad Summit. This forum has emerged as a leading group of like-minded countries working for peace, progress and prosperity in the Indo-Pacific region.” PM Modi said, “My meeting with President Biden will give us an opportunity to review and identify new avenues to further deepen the India-US Comprehensive Global Strategic Partnership.” The Quad comprises four countries India, the US, Australia and Japan. Its aim is an ‘open, stable and prosperous’ Indo-Pacific region. The combined population of the Quad countries is 1.9 billion. They account for 44 per cent of two-way trade in the Indo-Pacific region.
The combined GDP is US$34.8 trillion and their share in global foreign direct investment (FDI) is 30 per cent. After switching its turn with the US due to scheduling issues, India will now host the 2025 Quad summit.
