Kolkata| After protests and violence erupted in several parts of the city to demand the release of Trinamool Congress leaders and ministers arrested by the CBI in the Narada sting operation case, Governor Jagdeep Dhankhar told Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee that she was ‘constitutional norm’ and Follow the ‘rule of law’. Dhankar also asked the Kolkata Police to control the law and order situation in the city.
The Governor tweeted on Monday morning after the violence erupted in front of the gate of the CBI Regional Office at Nizam Palace, “Worried about the dangerous situation. Call on Mamta’s officials to abide by constitutional norms and rule of law. West Bengal Police, Kolkata Police, Home Bengal must take all steps to maintain law and order. Sad! The situation is being allowed to deteriorate without any concrete action by the authorities. ”
The governor was pointing to the chief minister who had reached the CBI office minutes after the arrest of two ministers Firhad Hakim and Subrata Mukherjee, an MLA Madan Mitra, and former mayor Sovan Chatterjee in the Narada sting operation case. In the sting operation, four TMC leaders and a police officer were shown taking money.
Just before the last assembly election in 2016, the bribery case shook the politics of the state.
The Trinamool supporters clashed with central forces reacting to the violence that erupted on the city’s streets. The Governor wrote, “I draw the attention of Mamta’s officials that I saw arson and stone-pelting on the channels and in the public domain in the CBI office. It is a pity that the Kolkata Police and the West Bengal Police were the only spectators. I urge you to take action And restore law and order. ”
He said, “Completely anarchy and anarchy. Police and administration are in silent mode. Hope you realize the consequences of such anarchy and the failure of constitutional machinery. To reflect and overcome this explosive situation Time is there. The situation is deteriorating minute by minute. ”
The CBI on Monday arrested Subrata Mukherjee, Firhad Hakim, Madan Mitra and Sowan Chatterjee in the 2016 Narada sting operation case. A TMC source told IANS that Mamata Banerjee reached the CBI office at Nizam Palace, where the four were kept and demanded to be arrested as well. TMC activists and supporters took to the streets to protest against the arrest.
The Narada Sting case dates back to 2016 and featured several high-profile TMC leaders taking money in front of cameras for fake companies. Apart from those arrested, the person who conducted the sting operation, Matthew Samuel, had also named the leader of Opposition in the Assembly, Shubhendu Adhikari and BJP leader Mukul Roy.
Both Hakim and Mukherjee are ministers in Mamata Banerjee’s cabinet. Legislative Assembly member Mitra has also been arrested earlier for his alleged role in the Saradha scandal. Sowan Chatterjee joined the BJP but resigned after being denied a party ticket for the recently concluded assembly elections.
