Typhoon ‘Yagi’ wreaks havoc, UN releases $2 million to help Vietnam

United Nations, The United Nations has released $2 million to deal with the widespread devastation caused by typhoon ‘Yagi’ in Vietnam. So far 290 people have died in the country due to the storm.

The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) said on Friday, “National authorities have reported more than 290 deaths, 237,000 houses damaged and 3 million people affected.”

According to news agency Xinhua, OCHA said that Acting UN Emergency Relief Coordinator Joyce Masuya has allocated $2 million from the UN Central Emergency Response Fund (CERF) to help the government.

The office said, “This amount will be given to the International Organization for Migration, the United Nations Development Program and UNICEF (United Nations Children’s Fund) to meet immediate life-saving needs in the worst-affected provinces of Yen Bai and Lao Cai.”

Typhoon ‘Yagi’ hit northern Vietnam two weeks ago. It passed near the capital Hanoi on the morning of September 7.

Typhoon ‘Yagi’ has caused massive destruction in Vietnam. It is believed that due to this the country’s economy may also slow down.

Due to the impact of the storm, Vietnam’s economic growth in 2024 may be 0.15 percent less than the previous estimate.

Local media quoted Planning and Investment Minister Nguyen Chi Dung on Monday as saying that due to storm ‘Yagi’ the economy may decline by 0.15 percent compared to the estimate of growth of 6.8 to seven percent this year.

According to the ministry, Typhoon Yagi has so far caused an estimated loss of 40 trillion Vietnamese dong (about 1.6 billion US dollars).

The areas affected by the typhoon account for 41 percent of the country’s economy and 40 percent of the population.
