Guwahati, March 31 The political atmosphere in Assam is heating up ahead of the upcoming elections. Congress leader Meera Borthakur on Tuesday launched a scathing attack on the BJP’s election manifesto, calling it “just a sham.”
She said the BJP made several promises in its vision document, including ensuring Assam’s security and expelling infiltrators, but there is no visible impact on the ground.
Borthakur said, “A lot has been written in the manifesto, but no actual work has been done.” She questioned the ruling party’s performance.
She also strongly condemned the alleged attack on a Congress candidate and accused BJP workers of being involved in the violence. She said, “Such incidents are unacceptable. We strongly condemn the attack on our candidate.”
Reacting to Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi’s allegations of property in Pakistan, Borthakur called these claims a political conspiracy. He said that Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma is making such statements out of fear of losing political ground.
He said, “Gaurav Gogoi is gaining support, and fearing his chances of coming to power is fueling such allegations.”
Regarding the electoral contest, Borthakur described the Congress as strong, claiming that the party would perform well in all seats. He said that senior leader Pradyut Bordoloi would finish third, while leaders like Jayanta Das would be key contenders in the closely contested elections.
Speaking on cultural issues, he mentioned popular Assamese singer Zubin Garg and said that if Congress comes to power, justice will be ensured within 100 days.
He said, “Congress fulfills its promises. Zubin Garg is the heartbeat of Assam and does not belong to any one person.”
The electoral contest in Assam is intensifying amid accusations and counter-accusations between the BJP and Congress.
