Another blow to Congress in Assam, six-time MLA Bharat Nara left the party

Guwahati. The Congress has suffered another setback in Assam. MLA Bharat Chandra Nara resigned from Congress on Monday. The MLA from Naoboicha has sent his resignation to Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge.

Nara wrote: “I resign from the Indian National Congress with immediate effect.”

Earlier, Bharat Nara had left the post of chairman of the party’s media cell in Assam. He was angry over his wife, Rani Nara, not getting a ticket for the Lok Sabha elections.

Bharat Nara was elected to the Assembly six times on Congress ticket. He won from Dhakuakhana constituency continuously from 1985 to 2011 and also served as a cabinet minister in the state.

In 2021, he moved to the Naoboicha seat in Lakhimpur district, and was again elected on a Congress ticket.

This time, Rani Nara was a strong contender for the ticket on Lakhimpur seat of Assam. She has won this Lok Sabha constituency three times and was also elected to Rajya Sabha once.

However, this time Congress has fielded Uday Shankar Hazarika from Lakhimpur seat instead of Rani Nara. He left BJP in December last year.
