Big relief to Rahul Gandhi from Supreme Court, ban on punishment in Modi surname case

New Delhi. Congress leader Rahul Gandhi has got a big relief in the matter of Modi surname. The Supreme Court on Friday stayed the sentence of Rahul Gandhi.

Senior advocate Abhishek Manu Singhvi appeared in the court on behalf of Rahul Gandhi. He said that this is not a case of kidnapping, rape or murder, it is a case of defamation.

The trial court sentenced Rahul Gandhi to two years imprisonment, after which he lost his membership of Parliament.

Senior advocate Abhishek Manu Singhvi, appearing for Gandhi, described the conviction as “strange”, while citing several other Supreme Court judgments to say that Gandhi’s conviction in the case should be suspended. He said, “Every victim is only a BJP functionary or worker.”

On the other hand, senior advocate Jethmalani, appearing for the complainant BJP MLA in the defamation case, said that Gandhi’s intention was to defame everyone with the surname ‘Modi’ just because it is similar to the Prime Minister’s surname.
