Kolkata, Sept. 22 Kolkata Police on Tuesday morning arrested four people in two separate cases in connection with the recent major violence that erupted in two phases at a college campus in Bhangar, on the southern outskirts of Kolkata.
The four arrested have been identified as Rabiul Jama Sheikh, Akhtar Ali Molla, Rabiul Mistry, and Aslam Habib.
Tension erupted at Bhangar College, located in a minority-dominated area of South 24 Parganas district, when BJP spokesperson and Bhangar College Managing Committee Chairman Sayantan Basu arrived on campus for administrative work.
Activists of the Students Federation of India (SFI), the student wing of the CPI(M), began protesting Basu’s visit to the campus. Subsequently, activists from the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) arrived at the scene, leading to a heated argument between the two student groups, ultimately resulting in two clashes.
A large police team arrived at the scene and managed to control the situation. On Tuesday morning, police arrested four people in connection with the clashes.
Police took suo motu cognizance of the incident at the Bhangar police station, arresting Rabiul Mistry and Rabiul Zaman Sheikh.
A police source stated that they face several charges, including unlawful assembly, trespassing into the college, and obstructing the Chairman of the Management Committee.
On the other hand, a group of ABVP activists also filed a written complaint at the Bhangar police station. Based on that complaint, police registered a separate case, in connection with which the remaining two people were arrested.
These four will be produced in the district court of South 24 Parganas district on Saturday, and the public prosecutor will seek their police custody.
Following Monday’s violence, a police picket has been deployed in front of the Bhangar College campus since Tuesday morning. Police are also monitoring the situation to ensure no new disturbances occur.
