Kolkata| West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Wednesday filed her nomination as a Trinamool Congress candidate from the Nandigram assembly constituency in East Midnapore. Earlier, Banerjee did a 2-km-long roadshow in Haldia and then went to the sub-divisional office of Haldia and filed her nomination. State party president Subrata Bakshi was also with him on this occasion. The Trinamool supremo has so far contested from his home seat Bhawanipur, but has stepped out of Nandigram for the first time.
Nandigram is considered the stronghold of Suvendu Adhikari who left TMC and joined BJP. In 2016, he became a minister in Mamta Banerjee-led government after choosing from this seat.
Suvendu Adhikari joined the saffron brigade in December last year. He has claimed that he will defeat Banerjee by more than 50 thousand votes in Nandigram.
