NDMC Chairman Keshav Chandra Leads by Example, Adopts Metro Commute in Line with Austerity Call of PM Modi

New Delhi: In a commendable gesture reflecting commitment to sustainable practices and fiscal prudence, Shri Keshav Chandra – Chairman of New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) today chose to travel by Delhi Metro while commuting to office Palika Kendra in New Delhi.

Responding to the call of the Hon’ble Prime Minister, Shri Narendra Modi Ji, for adopting austerity measures and reducing fuel consumption, Chairman, NDMC with his colleagues and Senior Officers undertook his journey from Lok Kalyan Marg Metro Station to Rajiv Chowk Metro Station via the Metro network and further took the Electric Auto to reach the Office.

Upon reaching the office, Chairman, NDMC, also convened weekly Senior officers Meeting (SoM) through virtual mode from the Headquarters, promoting the use of digital platforms to minimize travel and reduce fuel consumption among officers stationed outside the Headquarter building.

This initiative underscores NDMC’s commitment to promoting environmentally responsible practices, reducing carbon footprint and encouraging the use of public transport among citizens and officials alike. By setting an example, the Chairman aims to inspire a collective shift towards sustainable urban mobility and efficient resource utilization.

On the occasion, Shri Chandra said that inspired by the nationwide appeal of Hon’ble Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi Ji towards fuel conservation, energy efficiency and promotion of clean, green and sustainable transportation, NDMC has launched several major green mobility initiatives to encourage eco-friendly transportation in the New Delhi as Heart of national capital.

Chairman, NDMC – Shri Chandra informed today that NDMC has decided to provide a special 50% concession in parking charges for Electric Vehicles (EVs) at all notified parking sites operated by NDMC, as compared to parking charges applicable for conventional petrol and diesel vehicles of the same category.

The concession in parking charges for Electric Vehicles is already being implemented from 18th May 2026 and shall remain operational until further orders, Shri Chandra added.

Shri Chandra stated that this decision is a significant step towards realizing the vision of “Green Mobility” and “Sustainable Urban Transport.” He said that the initiative would contribute towards fuel conservation, reduction in pollution and creation of a cleaner and greener environment in the Capital city.

He also informed that with the objective of providing convenient, economical and environment-friendly transport facilities to employees, EV Auto service has been introduced from 15th May 2026 between Palika Kendra and nearby Metro Stations and SBS Gole Market. The EV Auto service is available between the different locations : Palika Kendra and nearby Metro Stations — Patel Chowk, Rajiv Chowk and Janpath, Palika Kendra and SBS Gole Market and various field offices/divisions of NDMC

As part of NDMC’s green transportation initiative, NDMC has introduced Bus Shuttle Service from the NDMC Housing Complexes located in various locations in New Delhi / Delhi to Palika Kendra for NDMC employees. The bus shuttle service has been introduced in major NDMC housing complexes including Palika Awas Sarojini Nagar, Amrit Kal Niwas, Jor Bagh, Bapu Dham Chanakyapuri, Valmiki Sadan, Mandir Marg and nearby Council residential colonies as well as Rohini and Saket Residential Complex, in order to provide better and more convenient public transport facilities to employees and residents.

Additionally, an EV Scooter Service has also been launched to provide “last-mile connectivity” for field staff and employees and to ensure quick, smooth and eco-friendly mobility to workplaces and field locations.

Shri Chandra also stated that NDMC remains committed to realisation of the vision “Green India” and “Sustainable Urban Development,” and will continue working towards making New Delhi a cleaner, greener, modern and environmentally sustainable city.

Chairman, NDMC earnestly appeal to all NDMC employees and esteemed citizens to actively embrace green mobility options in their daily lives. Choosing environment friendly modes of transport—such as walking, cycling, carpooling, and the use of electric or public transport— it will not only helps reduce air pollution but also contributes significantly to improving public health and conserving energy resources. Small, conscious choices made by each one of us can collectively lead to a substantial positive impact on our environment. As responsible stakeholders of our city, let us lead by example and adopt sustainable commuting practices. Together, we can pave the way for a healthier environment, reduced carbon footprint and a more livable urban space
