
Vijayawada/Austin. Indian student Wangavolu Deepthi died in a hit-and-run incident in Denton city of Texas. Deepthi’s master’s degree was to be completed in a few weeks.
Deepthi, 23, hailed from Guntur district of Andhra Pradesh. She had gone to the US in 2023 after completing her BTech from Narasaraopet Engineering College in Guntur. She was pursuing MS in Computer and Information Science at the University of North Texas.
The accident took place on the morning of April 12, when Deepthi and her friend Snigdha were walking on the road. A speeding sedan crushed both the students and fled. Deepthi suffered serious head injuries in the accident, while Snigdha was also injured.
Snigdha hails from Medikonduru in Andhra Pradesh.
Emergency service personnel rushed both of them to a nearby hospital, where Deepthi was kept in intensive care.
According to reports, about $80,000 was raised through a crowdfunding campaign for Deepthi’s treatment. However, her life could not be saved. Deepthi died on April 15. Snigdha is still undergoing treatment.
The Denton Police Department has launched an investigation and has issued an appeal for the public’s assistance in locating the vehicle.
Deepi’s family, shattered by the news, recalled their last conversation with her on April 10. She had invited her parents to attend her convocation ceremony in May.
Deepi’s father Hanumantha Rao, a small businessman, and mother Ramadevi, a homemaker, sold a part of their farmland to fund their daughter’s education abroad.
