External Affairs Minister Jaishankar meets Maldives President Muizzu

New Delhi, Oct 6 External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar met Maldives President Mohammed Muizzu, who arrived in New Delhi on Sunday on a five-day state visit at the invitation of President Draupadi Murmu.

After his meeting with the Maldives President, the External Affairs Minister wrote on X, “Glad to meet President Mohammed Muizzu today. Appreciate his commitment to enhancing India-Maldives relations. I am confident that his talks with Prime Minister Narendra Modi tomorrow will give new impetus to our friendly relations.”

Earlier, Minister of State for External Affairs Kirti Vardhan Singh welcomed Muizzu at the Delhi airport along with a high-level delegation.

During his visit to India, Muizzu will hold meetings with President Murmu, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and other senior officials of the Government of India.

On Monday, Muizzu will visit Rajghat and pay tribute to Mahatma Gandhi. He will hold bilateral talks with PM Modi at Hyderabad House. On Monday, he is also scheduled to meet President Draupadi Murmu and Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar.

The Maldives President, accompanied by First Lady Sajida Mohammed and senior ministers of his Cabinet, will visit Agra on Tuesday.

Ahead of Muizzu’s arrival in India, his office said in a statement on Friday, “President Dr. Muizzu is committed to enhancing bilateral relations with countries that play a key role in the development and growth of the Maldives, to ensure a dynamic and proactive foreign policy for the country. The discussions will focus on strengthening bilateral cooperation and further advancing the long-standing ties between the two countries.”

“This visit reflects the importance India attaches to its relations with the Maldives. It is expected to provide further impetus to cooperation and strong people-to-people ties between the two countries,” External Affairs Ministry spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said during the weekly media briefing in New Delhi on Friday afternoon.

According to the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), the Maldives President will also visit Mumbai and Bengaluru along with a high-level delegation of his country, where he will attend business events.
