WASHINGTON: Voting for the US presidential election began on Tuesday. The first vote was held in Dixville Notch and Millsfield, two small towns in the state of New Hampshire. According to the report of the news agency Xinhua, voters selected their favorite candidates for the governor of New Hampshire and the federal and state legislatures in addition to the presidency.
Les Oton, one of only 5 local registered voters, cast the first vote in the ‘Ballot Room’ of Dixville Knot’s Balms Resort. He described himself as a Republican but gave his vote to Democratic candidate Joe Biden. In a video posted on Twitter, Otten is saying, “I don’t agree with Trump on many issues.”
The other 4 votes also went to Biden’s account at Dixville Notch, while Millsfield received 5 of 16 votes to Trump.
Polling stations in some major cities on the east coast will open on Tuesday from 6 am (local time). The final vote will be in Alaska. At the same time, 9.8 crore voters have already cast ballots.
Election officials and experts have said that the country should be prepared that the results will not come on Tuesday. In addition to Trump-Biden’s election race, candidates for all 435 seats in the US House of Representatives and 35 of the 100 seats in the Senate are also in the fray. Apart from this, elections of governors are also to be held.
Elections are taking place amid epidemics and so far the country has recorded 92,84,261 cases and 2,31,507 deaths, the highest in the world. In addition, voters are concerned about partisan quarrels, violent racial conflicts and worsening social injustice.
